The House of Signatories

The house No. 26 in Pilies str. is considered a historical monument of Lithuania. The building was first mentioned in the edict issued in 1645. At the late 19th century, Kazimieras Štralis renovated a building that had a cafe called Baltasis Štralis (K. Štralis had four cafes named after the walls of the buildings). During World War I, there was a Lithuanian charity committee in this building. On 16 February 1918, twenty members of the Council of Lithuania signed the Act of Independence of Lithuania in one of the committee rooms on the second floor. In 1990, the house was handed over for the museum needs. The exposition in the House of Signatories presents Lithuania’s road to statehood from the 2nd half of the 19th century to signing of the Act of Independence of Lithuania on 16 February. Here is also displayed a notification document of the Act on the Restoration of the Independent State of Lithuania found by prof. Liudas Mažylis. Commemorations of 16 February are held annually in the House of Signatories.
