Kaunas Town Hall Square

It’s the biggest and the most beautiful square in Kaunas. Till the XVI century the Town Hall Square was famous as a market square. On July 28, 1542 the construction work of the Town Hall started and was controlled by architect Benediktas Chojnauskas. The Town Hall still is the focal point of the town. Besides it, the ensemble is also made up of: Siručiai Palace, the House of Zabielai Family, the Church of St. Francis Xavier and the Monastery (Jesuits), Communication History Museum, and Kaunas Post Station buildings, the Rectorate of Kaunas Priest Seminary, Kaunas Holy Trinity Bernardine Church and Convent. Now, the same as in the past, the Town Hall Square holds different events and fairs. There is a monument for the most prominent poet of romanticism – Maironis and a bishop and supporter of sobriety- Motiejus Valančius.
