Jiesia Mound with a settlement called Napoleon Mount

Between Panemunė and the railway bridges, Jiesia mound, also known as Napoleon Mount, is situated on the left bank of the Nemunas. The mound dates back to the early 1,000. This is a natural hill which was later used for defense. The traces of the ancient settlement were found on the southern and northern sides. Pottery and rough ceramics which are the cultural layer of the 14th-17th centuries were found. Since the 19th century, this mound has been called the Napoleon Mount. The name originated from Napoleon’s recorders who described how on 23 June 1812 the latter came to the Nemunas, near Panemunė and ordered to build three bridges. It was written about the construction of the bridges that two of them had to be built between Panemunė and the river Jiesia, and the third - to the left of this river, opposite the hill, from which the emperor was watching the army move on the way to Moscow.
