Dominican Monastery in Lukiškės Square

In 1642, Smolensk Castellan Jurgis Liutauras Chreptavičius donated 40,000 auksinai (old Lithuanian coins) to Vilnius Dominicans by ordering to build a church and a monastery in Lukiškės cemetery. This led to the development of the Dominican Church and Monastery in Lithuania. In the 17th century, there were fires in Vilnius which damaged the wooden Church of the Sts Apostles James and Philip. Therefore, the construction of a brick church was started in 1670. It was completed only after half a century. In the early 17th century, a brick monastery house was built next to the church and a school was established where the Dominican brothers worked. The hospital founded in the monastery premises in 1808 became the first secular hospital in Vilnius. In 1844, the Tsarist government abolished the monastery and moved the monks out. During the Soviet times, the church was turned into a fruit and vegetable warehouse. In 1992 when the church was returned to the believers, the center of the General Vicarage which unites the Belarusian, Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian Dominicans was established here.
